Flavonoids, such as those found in citrus and kiwi, have been shown to be highly effective in preventing age-related cognitive decline in both animals and humans.Besides protecting brain cells from free radical damage, they provide multiple ways of protecting brain cells from inflammatory assaults commonly seen in Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Kiwifruit contains several useful compounds that promote sleep. In one study consuming two kiwis one hour before sleep reduced the time in which it took the participants to get to sleep while it increased the duration and length of sleep. Japanese researchers discovered that citrus fragrance helps to normalize suppressed immune and neuro-endocrine functions in depressed patients. Lemon fragrance reduces fatigue and helps maintain mental vigor in performing simple mental tasks. So, if you are a little depressed and have problems sleeping, why not try these simple remedies in combination of a wholesome plant-based diet, daily exercise, and pro-active thinking?
